November 7th, 2013 The dining in Blanc’s neighborhood is among the best in San Francisco, and some would say it’s the very best for the amazing variety of cuisine with top notch quality, all in easy walking distance. A search on Yelp.com with Blanc as a start-point yields fan-favorites in Thai, Indonesian, classic American, Italian, even Yemeni -- and that’s the name of it, Yemeni, a block from Blanc and a Yelp 4-star.
Such popular-vote winners are reliable but there’s even more, at an arguably higher level, from recommendations of food critics from the likes of Michelin, Zagat and the SF Chronicle among others -- two to 5 blocks away:

October 8th, 2013 Blanc is the newest condominium development in its neighborhood in many years, and its design is turning heads. We talked with Stanley Saitowitz of Natoma Architects about his inspirations and perspective on this distinctive building.Stanley, you’ve done some fantastic award-winning buildings. What’s your general approach to designing a new building?
I always begin with the character of the site and aim to extend its uniqueness in a contemporary way . For example, our projects in SOMA express the diverse residential and industrial character of its fabric, while in Miami Beach our work reflects the tradition of tropical modernism which is such an important part of local character. None of our projects replicate what already exists - they aim to bring a new and contemporary perspective to each place.Tell us about the Blanc design process.
Nob Hill, Russian Hill and other North of Market neighborhoods have what you might call ‘wedding cake’ buildings from the 30’s with ornate white deco details on their perforated facades. That’s the fabric around our Sutter Street site, and our effort was to update that building-type in a contemporary way. Blanc reflects the neighborhood’s imagery and character of solid blocky masses. The building’s form, the perforated windows, the verticality, and the detail of white brick are reinterpretations of this style.What is it that makes design important to homebuyers?
Today’s sophisticated home buyers have developed a sense of style and preference. They seek out quality in design. They are interested in generous and flexible interior space filled with light. They want to live somewhere distinctive. More are more, developers like Sean are understanding that design in itself has value, and adds to a buyer’s appreciation of the home. There is a lot of effort that goes into developing and building a building, and design should be a part of that careful and inspired process.Q&A with Blanc’s Developer Sean Sullivan
August 06, 2013 Blanc is the first new neighborhood-scale condominium property in Nob Hill in years, and Sean Sullivan of the developer, JS Sullivan, is excited to see the culmination of an eight-year effort to create something special.Sean, what makes Blanc different than other housing options in San Francisco?
Blanc’s story is a combination of unusual and special things: a well-designed building, an incredible neighborhood and great pricing. When we were looking at what made sense for this site, we decided to create something you just can’t find: New homes with spacious 2- and 3-bedroom floorplans that aren’t priced in the stratosphere. We anticipate a range of singles, couples and families will want to live here, but there’s been particular interest from couples and young families who are facing the classic choice of having to move to the East Bay, or south or north, to get the space they need. About half of the building is made up of 3-bedroom homes -- that’s unheard of. And the majority of our 1,200 square-foot 2-bedrooms will be under $1 million, another nice surprise given today’s market. I was raised here and live here, and have a young child, so I understand their dilemma and hope Blanc will help some families stay. We’ve also created a beautiful, well designed collection of 35 homes made possible by this great location. My team is really proud of how Blanc reflects the classic style of San Francisco’s Nob Hill, but is also new and distinctive, inside and out. We worked carefully to put top-quality into Blanc, from Grohe fixtures, Bosch appliances, Sozo Studio cabinetry, Ceasar Stone countertops and hardwood floors, to creating floorplans that maximized the space, the daylight and the views.What should home buyers know about JS Sullivan? What differentiates your development firm?
We’re a San Francisco firm specializing in neighborhood scale housing, and we’re focused on the City. There are dozens and dozens of wonderful neighborhoods that make up San Francisco, and what’s really exciting to me is to find a property that can be transformed into housing to complement the unique character of that neighborhood, and add to the community’s vitality. Developing here is incredibly difficult but we’re tenacious about finding the right opportunities and executing on a vision. We’ve built hundreds of homes over the years in small-scale buildings, and love the challenge.How did you end up choosing Stanley Saitowitz as the architect?
Once you get to know Stanley’s work, it’s easy to see why he’s in such great demand all over the world. He has a great modern touch that gives a building a distinctive style, and at the same time responds to the neighborhood or city in which it’s built. Blanc has that modern aesthetic with a touch of “Great Gatsby” classic features that tie us beautifully with our Nob Hill surroundings, such as our brick facade. We even named the building Blanc as a nod to the 1920’s popularity of black and white, with a French twist. Stanley designed the very modern 1234 Howard and Yerba Buena Lofts, and the great response and awards showered on the buildings are well deserved.Construction On Track for a Beautiful Blanc
July 15, 2013 Blanc under construction shows only the typical protective barriers and scaffolds, but a peek behind the curtains is already yielding great insights into the beautifully designed homes and sumptuous floor-plans. With the sales-office models readying for our marketing debut in July, we took a hard-hat walk so we could share some of the things we’re excited about.Views are only enhanced by the volumes of glass, and well-positioned view corridors.
The modern design sensibility of our developer, architect and marketing teams have come together to create homes that make great use of space yet always “look for light.” Homes on upper floors naturally have the most to offer in terms of views, and the sweeping vistas of the penthouse and upper luxury homes are indeed breathtaking, but you’ll be amazed at the 7-foot windows on the entire Sutter Street side, the equally impressive view-corridors and green-space views of interior homes, and the careful placement of windows, doors, walls, and room layout enabling the best light and openness in every home.Floor plans are spacious (lots of closet space) and fit a variety of lifestyles.
As one walk-through participant noted, “I’d buy this home for the closet alone.” Men and women alike will appreciate the attention to our floor plans and layouts that reflect today’s tastes: Kitchen islands with everything you need for entertaining; spacious bedrooms that still afford great closets and nooks; in-home laundry and service space that’s convenient but practically invisible; luxurious bathrooms …. and six have their own patio or deck.Only 35 2- and 3-bedroom homes reflect a boutique-styled neighborhood property.
You can already tell from being inside Blanc’s 35 wonderful homes that they “fit” the neighborhood, San Francisco -- and you. These are not cookie-cutter homes of 50 families atop one another, but homes with character, style and grace, designed by well-regarded architect Stanley Saitowitz.
